Basidiomycetes, especially wood decomposers, are known to exhibit coordinated responses of the whole mycelium during the search for suitable substrates. Signal transmission between different parts of the mycelium seems at times very rapid and long-range. Some basidiomycete mycelia are among the largest and maybe oldest organisms and can cover many hectares. Thus, it appears that some means of fast communication between mycelial parts might exist.
