Navy bean grown in North Dakota is sensitive to low available Zn in the soils, and symptoms can range from discoloration in the leaf tissues to low seed yield. Earlier reports indicate that seed-Zn efficiency in dry bean is controlled by a single major gene (Singh and Westermann, 2002; Cichy et al., 2005), which makes it possible to develop cultivars with high seed-Zn content. Conventional and molecular breeding strategies have offered new opportunities to breeders to develop varieties with novel orvalue-added traits (Korban, 2005). The objective of this research was to field evaluate seven elite lines of navy bean developed for high seed-Zn content.
