In the heart of Portland, Oregon, a remarkable redevelopment has transformed a historically important structure into a state-of-the-art theater while achieving the nation's highest rating for sustainable building practices. Last fall the 1891 First Regiment Armory Annex opened its doors to the public for the first time in nearly four decades as the new home of Portland Center Stage. As the first building in the National Register of Historic Places and the first performing arts venue to have received a platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, the structure combines modern design innovations with a historic treasure to offer a unique public space.
