It is getting harder for oil and gas firms to justify spending on the energy transition. Oil majors banked bumper profits again last quarter as their core businesses delivered strong returns. Rewarding shareholders and boosting balance sheets are priorities as firms seek a credible strategy for the future. But higher interest rates make investing in lower-return, low-carbon energy a less attractive proposition.
