Determination of aluminum in wine by graphite furnace AAS: Validation of analytical method

A reliable and rapid method is presented for the determination of the total concentration of Al in wine by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). The method was validated and its analytical characteristics were checked (algorithm calibration curve, selectivity, analytical limits, accuracy, and precision). White, red, and fortified wines were used for the analysis. The method involves reduced risk of sample contamination using a one-step pre-treatment procedure. The calibration does not require matrix simulation since it is obtained with aqueous solutions of Al. The matrix effect is minimized by the high dilution of the sample (1:40). Calibration curves from aqueous standards were used to calculate the detection and quantification limits of the analyte, resulting in 1 mug L-1 an 2 mug L-l, respectively. The determination was performed in the linear range of 2-50 mug L-1 Spiking the wine samples with aqueous Al resulted in recoveries between 96% and 105%. Replicate wine samples at several Al concentration levels resulted in relative standard deviations better than 3.0% (n = 10), indicating that the analytical method is of high precision. The advantages of the method (practicability, specificity, precision, and accuracy) make it suitable for routine Al determinations in wine. [References: 33]
