Whilst the contribution made to Britain's infrastructure by the great innovators of the industrial revolution is unquestionable, there's no doubt that the need to update and modernise the UK's incredible assortment of Victorian railways, sewers, roads, bridges and buildings presents today's engineers with a very particular and demanding set of challenges. It could even be argued that these tangible, daily reminders of the golden age of innovation are one of the biggest obstacles to a new technological epoch.
