? 2022 Elsevier LtdWe provide physiological and metabolic insights into the complex role of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in fine-tuning algal metabolism to improve productivity. Genetic engineering strategies to improve algal GABA biosynthesis are also discussed. Our aim is to provide an understanding of how GABA can be used for cost-competitive algae-based biofuels and bioproducts.
