The benefits and potential hazards present in autonomous weapons systems within the military were discussed at the Royal Aeronautical Society Future Combat Air and Space Capabilities Summit recently. USAF Colonel Tucker 'Cinco' Hamilton, Chief of Artificial Intelligence (Al) Test and Operations, described a theoretical situation where an Al-enabled drone was tasked on a SEAD mission to locate and destroy enemy SAM sites, with a human pilot's final authority of a shoot/don't shoot. The Al then concluded that a 'don't shoot' decision from the human operator was inhibiting its mission - killing SAM sites. The result was that the drone attacked the human operator within the simulation.
