Differential pressures on filter plate packages - causes, avoidance and consequences

The firm Hoesch has been supplying filter presses since 1950. As time progressed and the products to he filtered became increasingly difficult to process, the filtration pressures were raised to improve the performance of the filter presses.However, this resulted more and more frequently in plate deformation or damage. In the meantime, it is known that these adverse effects can he attrihuted to the differential pressures acting between two adjacent chambers. The causes and/or triggers ofthese differential pressures are manifold and, although they cannot be excluded completely, their effect they can be mitigated to the extent that they no longer influence the filtration process nor the operational reliability yf the filter presses. Hoesch '5 experience relative to the causes and/or triggers of differential pressures, the effect of differential pressures on the operational reliability of filter presses and the processing results as well as recommended measures for avoiding and/or minimizing differential pressures in the filter chambers are summarized in this paper.
