Trunk, trunk and more trunk....the mantra of every bonsai artist. Shohin bonsai artists are not any different. By the use of air layering we can get some relatively "instant" success in regard to trunk diameter. Air layering allows us to develop rootson a limb of a tree while the limb is still attached to the tree. This allows for much thicker trunks than generally developed initially from a standard cutting. Often this method will work on species that are difficult to propagate by cuttings. The new bonsai can actually be styled while it is developing roots still attached to the parent tree. Several air layers can be taken off the same parent tree.
