Betaine improves broiler performance during heat stress

Betaine is trimethyl glycine. As a strong methyl donor, it may replace the methylation functions of both choline and methionine in broiler diets. Further, betaine has been shown to reduce the maintenance energy requirement, increase breast meat yield,and improve performance during heat stress. These several effects of betaine have not been demonstrated in the one trial. Further, little research has been conducted with the HCL form of betaine (75% betaine). A trial was conducted from April 10- May 23, 2011 (the hot period of the year) to measure the effects of betaine HCL on broiler performance, ability to replace added choline, partially replace added methionine and energy, metabolic rate and carcass composition.
