Bridge No.223 on the North Island Main Trunk Line (NIMT) is the Waiteti Viaduct, and was known as Bridge No.89 until about June 1974, when it was renumbered. It is some 3.2 kilometres south of Te Kuiti, was the first viaduct built on the NIMT, and was constructed by J and A Anderson of Christchurch. It was completed in March 1889. Unlike all the other viaducts originally constructed on the NIMT, the Waiteti Viaduct was built using wrought iron as the principal material; all the others were of steel construction.
