ABO AND RH(D) BLOOD GROUPS AMONG MAURYA (BACKWARD CASTE) POPULATION OF JAUNPUR DISTRICT (U.P.), INDIA

The present study reports the distribution of ABO and Rh(D) blood groups among 450 unrelated individuals from Maurya (Backward Caste) population of Jaunpur district. The overall ABO percentage is B (40%)> 0(31.33%) >A (25.33%) >AB (3.33%). The frequencies of Rh positive and Rh negative individuals are 92.4 % and 7.6% respectively. Red blood cell antigens are inherited characters and are important in transfusion medicine (Knight and deSilva, 1996). Approximately 300 blood group antigens are discoveredso far (Contreras and Lubenko,1999), and due to the advancement in antigen recognition techniques further blood groups are regularly added in this list. Even after 100 years of discovery by Landsteiner in 1900, the single most important test performed in blood banking services, is determination of ABO blood group to avoid morbidity and mortality (Honig and Bore, 1980). The ABO system was the first genetic polymorphism defined in human beings. Because of its easy identification, simple mode of inheritance, and different allelic frequencies in different populations, ABO blood groups are useful genetic markers in family and population studies and in linkage studies (Walker, 1980).
