Greenfield Aluminum Smelter Planned for Iceland

Klappir Development ehf. is preparing the construction and operation of a 240,000 tpy green-field aluminum smelter located in the Hafur-sstadir industrial zone in northern Iceland. The US$780 million project is being conducted in collaboration with China Nonferrous Metal Industry's (NFC) Foreign Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd., Icelandic engineering company EFLA, and the U.S. and Swiss engineering company GEAN-KTD Consortium, as well as with approval from local government. Energy for the new smelter is expected to be delivered by the state-owned national power company, Landsvirkjun, through nearby hydropower stations.
