摘要

Historically, research to explore traumatic brain injury (TBI) has focused on blunt head trauma, particularly as associated with severe consequences. In this injury pattern, treatment focuses on initial life-saving measurements, intensive care in the hospital, and rehabilitating activities of daily living. Far less attention has been focused on mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).Until recently, mild head injury was easily written off as "just a concussion" and patients were assured that their symptoms would "resolve with time." New attention to injuries sustained by professional athletes and military service members has underscored the need for greater attention to head injuries in general and to mTBI/con-cussion in particular. Despite increased interest in this area, the chronic consequences of mTBI are largely unknown and unpredictable. Injury patterns can include central nervous system sequelae, as well as direct and indirect central influences on peripheral sense organs.
