In a recent article, "Workplace Violence Research," NIOSH discusses the progress during the past 40 years in protecting workers from violence and summarizes research findings and prevention measures developed to reduce the risk to workers. Beginning with a discussion of the 1980s post office shootings, the article describes groups of workers disproportionately affected by workplace violence throughout the decades, such as those in healthcare or convenience stores, as well as taxicab drivers, teachers and school staff. The article also discusses workplace violence during the pandemic, during which workers in retail and other industries have experienced workplace violence while enforcing COVID-19 mitigation practices such as mask-wearing and physical distancing.
