Last time, we looked at kayaks and canoes of the Americas, and how kayaks have developed into a global sporting phenomenon, and double canoes have developed into catamarans. At the same time, the history of these small craft remains a strong heritage beacon for many indigenous people of the Americas and Pacific Islands. Here in part two, we'll explore the rafts of the Americas. The significance and seaworthiness of the rafts of the Pacific South American coast are still not fully appreciated. Investigation reveals that these boats were capable of crossing oceans and were definitely an important part of trade between the largest empires pre-colonization: Incan, Aztec, and Mayan.
