The biotech start-up Afyren has inaugurated its first commercial-scale plant, Afyren Neoxy, in the city of Carling Saint-Avoid. According to a press release in late September, it will produce biobased organic acids. Afyren secured €80 million in funding to build the plant. Afyren partnered with Bpifrance through its Societe de Projets Industriels (SPI) fund. Afyren Neoxy is a joint venture, 51% owned by Afyren and 49% by the "Society de Projets Industriels" (SPI) fund managed by Bpifrance. While the process conversion technology details have not been fully disclosed, it is a fermentation platform with feedstocks sugar beet pulp and molasses. Ten patents support the technology. Afyren has already signed a long-term agreement with Suedzucker to supply the feedstock.
