To fully appreciate the benefits of organic acids, it is essential to understand their mode of action: Organic acids work in dissociated and in undissociated forms. In the dissociated form, organic acids have a pH-reducing effect. On the other side there are the organic acids in undissociated form, which have a direct antimicrobial effect against gram-negative bacteria. The undissociated form of organic acids are able to enter the cell of the bacteria and dissociate, reducing the pH and disrupting DNA and protein synthesis. The bacteria are then unable to replicate. This means less bacterial load in the digestive tract and improved growth performance of the animals.
