The processing requirements for high speed data communicationsystems (symbol rates in excess of 5 MHz) are beyond the capabilitiesof programmable devices such as DSP chips and FPGAs. Designers ofsuch systems have traditionally incurred the high none recurringengineering (NRE) costs and long development times associated withcustom ASIC implementations. In this paper we highlight an energingtrend in the the development of parametrizable, high speed datapathsfor application in data communications. Such circuits can deliver thehigh throughputs associated with traditional ASIC implementationswhile at the same time provide the user with the ability to vary keysystem parameters, or enven redefine the circuit functionality amonga finite number of alternatives.
