Conventional injection moulding is not suited to the production of thick parts. This is because the low thermal conductivity and relatively high srinkage of plastics would result in long uneconomic cycle times and unsightly sink marks. the process is also unable to deal with closed hollow parts because it would be impossible to extract the mould core. Both of these problems can be solved by gas-assisted injection moulding. Clive Maier~* explains.
