Company finds piston rod seals lacking in strength

According to UK company Marine Sealing Services, analysis of piston rod sealing systems has shown a general failure in the choice of materials used for the stuffing box systems. It would appear that the sometimes hostile conditions in the under piston area and the mix of differing oils plus the inclusion of water and possibly mild sulphuric acids can have an effect on the ring and spring materials.
