Traditional production logging tools have long been predicated on wells being essentially vertical.So as horizontal and highly deviated wells proliferated the inventory of tools,while able to get the job done,were less than optimal.Rick von Flatern looks at one company's attempts to provide operators with more accurate information on what is going on in their highly deviated,producing wells.Given its starting point in the world of vertical wells,the best the industry could offer when asked to log deviated wells with highly complex flow regimes,was to string together a series of vertical tools,each designed to capture a few specific bits of information and then to combine that captured data to conjure a description of what flow was coming from where along a producing interval.The resulting suites of tools have enjoyed reasonable success and been well received but by their nature they were less than optimum solutions.
