Having met - and, indeed, befriended - a good many veterans of Ⅷ Fighter Command, the author of this new volume is extremely well-placed to both tell the story of their war over Europe from 1942-45 and set it in the wider context. While there have been many books on the US Army Air Forces' fighter and bomber operations from Britain during the Second World War, few, surely, have been as well-written as this. McKelvey Cleaver begins with a highly vivid account of events on 28 July 1943, which he calls "the most important day in the history of Ⅷ Fighter Command" owing to its significant successes against Luftwaffe opposition, before moving on to the historical background - the American military build-up to hostilities, the evolution of the different fighter types - prior to the main narrative. This gets under way with the earliest Ⅷ FC sorties, courtesy the 31st Fighter Group's Spitfires in August 1942.
