Well being and health of Railway employees and their families is paramount in the organizational priority of Indian Railways. The robust healthcare infrastructure caters to the large workforce by providing equitable and comprehensive healthcare facilities through Railway hospitals and health units set up across the length and breadth of the country. Even India's remote villages have access to Railway Health Units and thus Railways play a crucial role in rural healthcare also. And even during these difficult times arising out of COVID-19, Railway hospitals are better equipped to tackle exigencies. The 'Lifeline of the Nation', Indian Railways, rapidly geared up in support of the National cause to bring the country out of the quagmire of uncertainty. During the first wave, the foremost challenge was to safely transport thousands of stranded interstate guests back home. 4,450 Shramik Specials were operated to various states to carry over 60 lakh migrant workers and other stranded persons. Railways ensured uninterrupted transportation of milk, food grains and medicines so that the supply chain of essentials did not suffer due to lockdown. Special trains were run to cater to important travel needs of common man while workmen specials served essential staff of government and healthcare institutions. Our workshops and depots pooled their resources to refurbish coaches as COVID isolation wards to serve COVID patients in case of shortage of beds in hospitals. Furthermore, the field units also took up the task of manufacturing sanitizers, PPEs and masks for in-house distribution.
