Emergency disconnect packages are an essential feature of rigid riser technology, but their design has always carried inherent limitations. Now an Aberdeen-based development team claims to have overcome the key EDP design issues with a groundbreaking new approach. Lewis managing director Drummond Lawson explains how. Since the oil industry first began deploying rigid risers from dynamically positioned vessels, it has been essential that there is a way of releasing the riser from the seabed quickly if a vessel is unable to hold position above the subsea well, due to deteriorating weather or engine problems.
