Shipowner IM Skaugen is already involved in developing a gas shipping business in China and, in cooperation with its local partner and other parties, is taking steps to cement its relationships. IM Skaugen first established an office in Shanghai in 1995, convinced of the potential need for gas tanker capacity to feed the rapidly expanding Chinese economy. In the summer of 1996 it signed a joint venture agreement with Hubei Tianfa to set up a company, TNGC, to transport LPG to new terminal capacity on the Yangtse river. In addition, the chemical tanker operation Skaugen set up in Singapore, Princess Carriers, has operated with Chinese crew.
