By the time I started graduate school in 2004, I was already a serious mineral collector and well aware of important southern African mineral localities such as Tsumeb, Namibia and the Kalahari Manganese Fields of South Africa. Another student who I met was South African and had had Bruce Cairncross as a professor. When he learned I collected minerals, he loaned me his personal copy of The Manganese Adventure, Bruce's beautiful book about the Kalahari Manganese Fields.
