Rice biotech research at the Taiwan agricultural research institute

The Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI, http://www.tari.gov.tw) (Fig. 1) was established in 1895 in Taipei and its headquarters was moved to Wufeng, Taichung in 1977. It occupies an area of 140 ha, of which 17 ha are for buildings and the rest are for experimental farms. In addition to the administrative units, it has ten research divisions, namely Agronomy, Horticulture, Agricultural Chemistry, Plant Pathology, Applied Zoology, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Economy, Plant Germplasm, Technical Services, and Farm Management at the headquarters, and four experimental stations at Kuanhsi, Kuken, Chiayi and Fengshan. Among the 266 staff members, 85 percent are engaged in research. About 67 percent or 170 scientists hold a doctorate or master's degree.
