Japan's far seas fishery produced more than 3 million tons in the 1980s,but withdrawals from 200 nautical miles zone of foreign countries have continued since then,and the number has now dropped to less than 10% at 300,000 tons. This article provides an overview of far seas fisheries of Japan,and describes the historical background and current situation of tuna purse seine fisheries,which is the typical far seas fisheries,as well as the conditions for survival.
