In March 2022, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced its expectation that, by 2024, overall air traveller numbers would exceed pre-Covid 2019 levels by 3%.In Europe, IATA anticipates a 5% increase compared to 2019 levels, a figure that grows to 11% in 2025 and, in line with predictions for growth in commercial air traffic globally, continues to increase by as much as 50% by around 2040.Growth is good for an industry hit so hard by the pandemic but, at the same time, airlines must achieve sustainable growth. In 2021, the Air Transport Action Group, comprising the world's leading commercial aviation stakeholders, announced the global air transport sector's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
