Among the highlights of today's opening ceremony is the recognition of Burl Osborne for whom this award and these prizes are named. This year, however, it is another of Osborne's contributions that I would like to acknowledge. Juanita Osborne, the late mother of Burl Osborne, was a young widow in 1966 when she donated one of her kidneys to Burl. The procedure was new and the outcomes uncertain. This loving and courageous gift made it possible for Burl to live a life filled with remarkable achievements that followed his days as one of the pioneer hemodialysis patients. Mrs. Osborne went on to lead a long and active life that included worldwide travel and a deep commitment to her family. Juanita Osborne died this year at the age of 88 of an illness unrelated to her kidney donation and is sorely missed by her family.
