A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agent has recently (March 6,2008) reported that since December, the FDA has received 785 reports of serious allergic reactions linked to Baxter heparin or of unknown origin. Chief Medical Officer Janet Wood of the FDA said the number of deaths associated with heparin had risen from 4 to 19, some occurring as far back as January 2007.Baxter International, Inc. voluntarily recalled all remaining lots of its heparin injection on Thursday, February 28, 2006. The raw material for Baxter heparin was provided by one of the Chinese suppliers in Chang Zhou owned by Wisconsin-based Scientific Protein Laboratories IXC.
