Although the acylation of alkenes has been studied for more than a century,the diacyla-tion to give pyrylium salts was discovered only around 1960 because the diacylation products (the pyrylium salts)being soluble in water,were being unintentionally discarded,despite the fact that sometimes they can be the main reaction product.
