Ceramics as a messenger of social change is more than just a catchy phrase for recovery activist Mark Prest, the former gallery director at the City Gallery, Leicester. When his own recovery from alcohol addiction instigated a shift in his practice towards a more social context, he started to think about the obvious parallels between working with clay and the transformative processes of recovery from substance misuse. This seed of a thought eventually grew into a partnership between centres of European ceramic excellence in six countries, taking in Sicily, Spain and Turkey.
