Japan is in the midst of reviewing whether destination clauses contained within existing long-term LNG contracts with international sellers violate domestic competition laws. If the clauses are found to be in violation, this could open up existing contracts for renegotiation, as was the case in Europe in 2004. Back then, the European Commission confirmed that destination clauses contained within contracts concluded by France's GDF with Eni and ENEL restricted competition and market fluidity.
