It didn't take long after World War Two -just five years - for American bombers to return to British shores. With East-West tensions growing, and the Korean War under way, it sent out a powerful signal to the Soviet Union: the US would continue to aid in the defence of Europe. US Air Force Strategic Air Command's early deployments were by B-50 and B-29 Superfortress units. However, the jet bomber age was coming. For SAC that meant another Boeing product, the B-47 Stratojet. First flown in 1947 and inducted into service in 1951, the impressive six-jet machine was soon at the forefront of America's global strategic capabilities.
