Theories of quantum spin systems on the triangular lattice have played a central role in correlated electron physics ever since Anderson's 1973 proposal of a "resonating valance bond" (RVB) ground state as an alternative to conventional magnetic order. While Anderson's conjecture was not correct for the simple antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model he studied, it sparked an intense debate about unconventional ground states. The search for a novel quantum state of matter is one of the most exiting aims of condensed matter physics.
