The number of automobiles in the world is reaching almost 700 million. But, the future of automotive transportation has to be different from the current system because of global resource and environmental constraints or transportation problems ingreater metropolitan areas. What the future automotive transportation system should be is described from the viewpoint of mobility of people in metropolitan areas. New systems presently under development are also presented.
