India is heavily reliant on the Middle East with around 62% of oil imports coming from the region in 2013. Over the last month, India imported over 65% of its crude oil from states surrounding the Persian Gulf, with Iraq providing almost 18% of its total imports and Iran around 8%. Due to this dependency on politically volatile states the Indian Oil Ministry is planning to gradually diversify oil import sources, while also attempting to increase natural gas imports to displace growth in oil consumption.
