THE year 2001 saw te worst performance by Taiwan's economy in 30 years, but there were signs of recovery towards the end of 2001 (demand for semiconductors picked up slightly) and a prudent fiscal policy following that disastrous year, including an extra budget worth NTus111.5bn (USus3.2bn), took the edge off plummeting industrial output and weak domestic demand.
