CHICAGO—About one million Chicago-area residents have the opportunity to be smarter in the way they heat their homes, thanks to the help of area utility companies. A program devised by northern Illinois utilities and advocacy groups is offering rebates of up to half the cost to install smart thermostats, according to a press release from the Environmental Law & Policy Center. It has a goal of reaching one million customers over the next five years, which will make it the largest rebate program of its kind in the nation.
