Shell Pushes Forward FLNG Technology With Prelude FID

BMI View: Despite the risk of project delays and cost overruns with Shell's untested FLNG technology, the company's position at the forefront of the new technology could propel to the top of global gas industry. Anglo-Dutch major Royal Dutch Shell's Australian liquefed natural gas (LNG) business has taken a major step forward with the announcement on May 20 that it has made a fnal investment decision (FID) on the groundbreaking US$10bn Prelude foating LNG (FLNG) project. With plans to invest US$30-50bn in Australia over the next fve years developing a number of LNG projects to meet soaring Asia-Pacifc gas demand, the country is at the heart of Shell's growth strategy, and progress at Prelude should be seen as a positive step in Shell's regional strategy.
