Current studies of these glasses focus on the structural influence of the additional oxide (NiO). In this study, NiO–ZnO–Bi2 O3 –B2 O3 glasses were investigated spectroscopically with UV-vis-NIR and RAMAN spectra recorded for glass with different main oxide contents. Optical absorption spectra show that the optical absorption edges are not sharply defined as a characteristic of the amorphous nature of samples. A shift towards longer wavelengths with increasing NiO concentration is observed in the cut off wavelength and absorption edge. The formation of B–O–Bi and B–O–Zn/Ni bridging bonds in the glass structure is suggested from RAMAN spectra. In the present work, the physical and optical properties of zinc bismuth borate glasses doped nickel ions have been carried out.
