Global free trade is dead — or so Washington predicts and the IMF fears. The ideal of an unrestricted fow of goods, services and capital was never fully achieved after the Cold War, except perhaps in commodities. But walking away from this goal throws up new obstacles to easing the path of an increasingly chaotic energy transition and tackling the existential threat of climate change.
