'Only about 3 per cent of the energy used for computers goes towards making calculations. This is stupid and wrong! SOFTWARE developers should be "thinking the impossible" to be able to deal with future shifts in hardware technology, according to a leading IBM researcher. In the next decade, computers are likely to be able to communicate intelligently with each other and with humans, said Herbert Kircher, head of the IBM Germany Development Laboratory. Many everyday objects will be embedded with "intelligent dust" enabling the object to know where it is, who it is and where it should go, he said.
