THE GAS DAY: SYNCING UP SCHEDULES FOR THE GAS AND ELECTRICITY INDUSTRIES

For the past two years, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has made the increased interdependency of the natural gas and electricity systems a top priority. In 2013, FERC held a series of technical conferences to examine how mismatches in the gas and electricity trading and nomination schedules may impact reliability for both natural gas and electricity customers. While altering the natural gas and electricity schedules will not create new pipeline capacity in constrained areas, FERC has promoted harmonization between the natural gas and electricity schedules. Absent proactive measures by the industry on this subject, FERC could initiate a rulemaking or other proceeding to impose a solution on the gas and electricity industries.
