Sales Flexibility Crucial Amid Impending LNG Oversupply

Japan's Jera Co, a joint venture between Tokyo Electric and Chubu Electric and also one of the world's largest buyers of LNG, has reportedly signed a deal with a European entity, which will allow it to resell surplus LNG cargoes into Europe. Though details with regards to the deal are scarce, it is likely to be similar in scope to the firm's May 2016 agreement with France's EDF. The deal could see Jera send up to 1.5mn tonnes of LNG per annum to Europe via its new partner, while also allowing it to adjust the selling volume depending on demand at home. Kansai Electric also sought a similar arrangement through its July 2015 agreement with Engie (see 'Flexible LNG Cargoes A Lifeline For Japanese Utilities', July 27 2015).
