BMI View: We expect that Indonesia will most likely postpone a politically contentious revision of its fuel subsidy scheme until after the 2014 elections. To curb an increasingly unsustainable strain on both the government budget and its reserves from a growing fuel import burden, targeted subsidy programmes have been suggested; however, the effectiveness of these schemes could be undermined by cumbersome implementation and enforcement.
