This paper discusses the use of liquid crystals (LCs) to study the domain structure in magnetic materials. Domains on the surface of thin amorphous films made from cobalt-containing alloys have been studied by means of LCs that possess giant diamagnetic anisotropy. The results of using LCs are compared with the results obtained using magnetic emulsions. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.
